In support of free care for children victims of Noma
Appeal launched by Noma Fund to Heads of State and Government
Dear Heads of State and Government,
Noma disease currently affects each year over 140,000 children between the ages of 2 and 6, all from the world’s poorest areas. South America, South-East Asia and Africa are the regions most affected by the disease.
Noma has initial symptoms that are easily noticeable: the disease first manifests itself as small intraoral lesions, which progress quite quickly to facial edema, associated with putrid breath, ganglia and high fever.
At this stage, the disease is curable, and the injection of a simple antibiotic is enough to cure the infected child.
Rehabilitation and reinsertion of Noma children
It is with the purpose of providing assistance to children that we can still save that this petition for free health care is launched. Providing the necessary antibiotics to populations at risk, managing their treatment by local medical teams, monitoring the evolution of the first symptoms… are all elements that would contribute to the eradication of Noma disease.
Our concern to make patient care free of charge also concerns Noma survivors, who show the physical and psychological evidence of an extremely disabling disease. Managing their maxillofacial surgery and psychosocial follow-up are major challenges for the optimal reintegration of children victims of this disease of extreme poverty. Giving the children of Noma a face and a dignified life, as well as the young Ita has had the opportunity to benefit from (see photos on the right), are the objectives of this petition !
By signing this petition for free care in favour of Noma patients, you are helping to reverse the disease of Noma, a disease of shame and misery, a disease of injustice that only affects the poorest people in our world. Signing the petition is a way of giving children in at-risk areas a chance to live the life they deserve, and to have a childhood worthy of the name.

TO PUT AN END TO THE INJUSTICE OF THIS DISEASE OF MISERY
Disease of another era, Noma affects the world’s poorest people, already facing many difficulties. By signing the petition in favour of free care of Noma, you are putting an end to this injustice of children born into poverty.
IN FAVOUR OF THE REHABILITATION OF NOMA SURVIVORS
The few survivors of Noma are struggling to rebuild themselves because of disabling stigma. Allowing them to benefit from maxillofacial surgery is a key step in the process of reinsertion and rehabilitation.
